The electronic control system for an engine makes use of the Manifold Pressure Sensor (MAP). Fuel injection is typically used in pressure sensor-equipped engines. The electronic control unit for the engine receives instantaneous information about the manifold pressure from the sensor. The data are used to calculate the engine’s air mass flow rate and air density, which in turn are used to figure out how much fuel is needed for perfect combustion.
An MAF sensor, a Pressure sensor, or sometimes both can be used to detect the intake airflow in a fuel-injected engine. The best MAP sensor can be used for diagnostics because it can detect leaks in the inlet manifold and measure the performance of the turbo and throttle.
